The Good Part Given

"But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.’"

Luke 10:41-42

There I was a scraggly haired, freckled face, wide-eyed little girl sprawled comfortably on the floor in front of the big comfy chair. With scraped up knees from climbing the Magnolia tree, and my face all smudged with dirt, I sat waiting and watching at the feet of my beloved papa. Sometimes I would sit for hours anxiously waiting for him to finish reading his newspaper that would tell him of the events of the day. I knew from experience, as did the other grandchildren, that when papa finished reading his newspaper he would get up from his favorite chair. This is what I waited for, what all my cousins waited for; for papa to finally get up! Why was it so important for him to get up you might ask? It’s what was left behind that was so great.

My papa ran a laundry delivery route and sometimes I got to go with him on the ride; which I absolutely loved to do. Because he ran this route, he would come home with pockets full of change. We grandkids all knew that when papa sat down in his chair that some of the change always made its way down into the pockets of his chair. Once he got up we were always allowed to have any change left behind. This was papa’s rule and we were thrilled to abide by it! He loved to make us wait because our waiting was his entertainment and company. I loved my sweet papa so much and no doubt that he loved and adored his grand kids. We were the delight of his heart.

I sat at my papa’s chair wide eyed with wonder because I knew that if I waited long enough, I would walk away richer than when I came. I recognized the benefit of being there. I believe it was the same way with Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus. She knew the benefit, the rewards of being before Him, waiting on the treasures that only He could give. We not only enjoy His company but He imparts that which is necessary for life; in fact Jesus told Mary’s sister Martha that this was the only one thing we really needed to have. Jesus doesn’t look for what we give to Him, He longs to give to us. Learn the beauty and reward of being at His feet and you’ll walk away a woman of wealth; a wealth that the world can never give you and never take away.

Live at his feet.
