The Way of the Humble

"He leads the humble in justice, And He teaches the humble His way."

Psalm 25:9

There’s nothing more important to a bride than her wedding gown. One of my most treasured moments was the day I saw my daughters in their wedding gowns. Like so many mothers it’s such a bitter sweet time to walk through with them. These prized moments we were privileged to share radiated with joy and the thrill of walking down the aisle to marry the love of their life permeated every thought, every decision made. That day, they had but one person in mind, just one consuming dream, their beloved groom. I remember them walking out and seeing them for the first time clothed with the garments of promise and hope. They were both stunning, taking captive the very air in the room. Their adornment transformed them from young girls to women right before my eyes. I have two wonderful daughters who are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. Their wedding garments lit up the beauty veiled within captivating not only their mother’s attention but everyone in the room. It was their adornment that seized the platform of attention. It seized my heart with such joy to see their outward glory do justice to their inward splendor.

Just as the garments of white illumine the bride so the garments of humility illumine the bride belonging to the Lord. There’s nothing more beautiful than a gracious woman clothed in the sweet raiment of humility. She catches the eye of God. In fact, He is drawn to her. Listen to what He says in Isaiah 66:2: "…But to this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit…" He is ever in search of the heart that is humble. Once found, He moves without reservation to immediately secure her, strengthen and applaud her life with His manifold love and favor. She is a rare jewel not hewn from the shadows of the earth but rather from the beam of light shed abroad her life through Jesus. She refuses to settle, refuses acknowledgement, and absolutely stands against anything that would rob God of His glory…of His rightful place.

Andrew Murry wrote ": Pride must die in you, or nothing of Heaven can live in you. " Humility is preceded by the funeral of pride. Before humility comes a breaking down of heart, bending low into the dust before God, forsaking ones sin and crying out for His forgiveness. Humility recognizes the work is not of self but of God through self. When this takes place, we gain a fresh impulse for Heaven, an awakening of new beginnings with God having a sense of our weakness colliding with His strength.

Bury pride so humility can live.
