The Fleeting of Time

"For who knows what is good for a man during his lifetime, during the few years of his futile life? He will spend them like a shadow…"

Ecclesiastes 6:12

When I received the invitation in the mail to attend my High School Reunion I was immediately taken back twenty years in my mind’s eye to a time when the world was my stage and time seemed to be on my side. I was young and had big dreams for my future believing that my life was destined for great things. It didn’t take long before I realized that greatness doesn’t just knock on your door and achievement isn’t going to show up in your mailbox one day marked priority mail. Life doesn’t "just happen" and the choices we make today do affect our tomorrows! I learned very quickly that life was hard and it involved work and diligence and responsibility lurked around every corner ready to pounce like an unavoidable nightmare. And believe me when I say, time wasn’t on my side! Before I knew it my kids were grown and I was asking myself where 20 years had run off to and the young woman once full of ambition with a bright future was now full of doubt and fear of wasting her life having no accomplishments to show for herself. I remember having to write down a synopsis of my life for the reunion program they were putting together. It made me think long and hard; what had I accomplished and where would I go from here? Had I failed? When you see your life in black and white it hits you square between the eyes!

I believe we set ourselves up for failure because we either haven’t set any goals for ourselves or simply because we’ve set our goals so low. If we want to attain great things then we must set our aim for greatness. We live dull, uneventful and unfruitful lives for God’s Kingdom because we incase our lives in the bubble of the ordinary having no expectations of achievement or contribution to the world in which we live. But God! Beloved has marked us for greatness, not within ourselves, but within Him for He is great and the doer of great and mighty things. He is never limited by our inexperience, our inabilities, our shallow thinking and never is He confined by our failures! Praise the Lord! It does not matter who we are, what we are, or what we have done or not done; it only matters Who He is! He is greater than every day we have wasted in our lives, greater than every bad decision we’ve made, greater than any poor judgment we’ve passed, greater than every negative thought, and of every single failure great or small. We do not affect him but rather He affects us, if we will but let Him!

The sad truth is Beloved; we often lose our greatness for God’s Kingdom in our search for self-gratification. We live in the moment of pleasure rather than in the view of eternity. Let me share with you the words of Charles Spurgeon, one of God’s most valiant warriors. "Aspire to be something more than the mass of church members. Lift up your cry to God and beseech Him to fire you with a nobler ambition than that which possesses the common Christian-that you may be found faithful unto God at the last, and may win many crowns for your Lord and Master, Christ." Let me leave you with this thought: what has your years of life thus far been given to? How much has the Lord received of what has already been spent? Make your life count; don’t let self rob you of time that you could spend upon Heaven. Time is the precious gift God has given us; may you not waste it.
