The Long Road Back

"But he who sins against me injures himself; All those who hate me love death."

Proverbs 8:36

There is no easy road to forgiveness and restoration.  The road leading away from God may be an easy trek but the one returning isn’t.  Ashamedly, I tell you that I know this from personal experience.  Ease is the catalyst of exit and pain is the catalyst of entrance.  I believe it has something to do with that obstinate self driven will of ours that demands its own way.  If you’ve ever reared a rebellious teenager you’ll understand what I mean!  I was one of those.  And no matter the reason for my turning away from the path that I knew was right, it always took a painful occurrence in my life to redirect my focus to the right way; God’s way.  Of course this is a method my mother fully supported and used with me, and it usually worked quickly to bring correction.

There has never been a time when I have disobeyed God, delayed in obeying or when I willfully chose to walk out of His will that I did not regret it.  But, there has never been a time when I chose to follow God that I regretted it…never.   Our soul was created to be near to God, to please Him and love Him in all things.  When this is absent we will default to remorse.  But we aren’t the only ones who experience sadness and regret when we get out of His will.  There is One greater who carries the weight of our decisions and that is God.

God grieves when we forsake or forget about Him.  He grieves not for Himself, but rather in the knowledge that He knows what sin will cost His child who has strayed from the truth of His Word.  God grieves for you and for me because He wants only the best for us which is always His way and His plan.  And when we lose sight of Him, in love He stoops down and lays hold of a messenger who will speak the words of His heart.  Hosea was such a messenger sent to remind us that there is no other way back to God other than the recognition of our desperate need of Calvary’s forgiving grace.

God leaves the lights of home burning even in the darkness
