When Temptations Come Calling

“For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.”

Hebrews 2:18

A woman had gone out shopping for a dress one day.  She searched the stores over and finally found one she just absolutely could not resist.  It looked perfect on her and it made her feel so beautiful and confident.  The problem was that the dress was way out of her budget and she knew her husband would never approve of her spending that much money.  Her better judgment lost and she ended up buying the dress anyway.  When she got home she showed her husband the new dress along with the hefty price tag.  In his aggravation he asked her why she would buy a dress that she knew they could not afford.  She explained to her husband that the devil made her do it.  He told her that she should have said to the devil, “get behind me Satan”.  The wife replied that she did tell the devil to get behind her and it didn’t work.  He just whispered in her ear, “the dress looks good from the back too!”

I must admit, I completely understand this women’s point of view along with a few chuckles.  Temptations are packaged differently.  Sometimes they are wrapped up in a cute dress, a calorie loaded dessert, a bottle, a relationship, a TV program or movie etc.,but either way they all have the power to cause us to do something we will regret at a later juncture.  But how do we handle temptations when they arise?  How do we win over the desires of our flesh?  Hebrews 2:18 gives us the instructions for success!  This is good news for all of us because we are all going to be tempted.  The first powerful truth given to us in this verse of Scripture is the knowledge that Jesus was tempted and had overcome every temptation.  He never lost against a situation of being tempted.  We have a victor, a hero, an idol to look up to as someone we can strive to be like.  He stands for hope for all us.  So we can know that in every tempting situation, we have hope for victory no matter what it is.

The second thing we are taught is that our hero is ready and able to help us when we are tempted.  But do we believe He is able?  We must have faith in His ability to rescue us.  This is problem number one with most of us.  We lack confidence in Jesus’ ability to rescue us from our temptations.  The second problem is we try to overcome the temptation ourselves rather than asking for deliverance from the One who can deliver us.  He is able but we must ask.  We have a hero who is victorious and we have a hero who is able.  Every temptation that you and I are faced with, no matter how severe, Jesus can deliver us from.  And the more we call upon Him, the less power the temptations will have,  and the stronger we will become when faced with them in the future.  Every time we cry for help to Jesus, the stronger our faith becomes and the weaker the temptations become.
