The Faithful Mind

"My Son forget not my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments."

Proverbs 3:1

When I hit my forties my mind left and shortly after that my eyes went looking for it! My memory is not what I would like for it to be and it seems to be fading much faster than I had anticipated when I was in my twenties. How many of us can remember what the pastor spoke on Sunday before last? Living in the Bible belt of America, I do not lack for the Word of God. I can tune into multiple radio stations to find a good sermon or choose from a host of channels on my television to find a Bible teacher or preacher. If that’s not good enough, I can pull out my old favorite tapes or CDS or DVD’s. If I need more to choose from than that, I can always go to the web where my choices are limitless. Let’s not forget the old tried and true; reading it! Our supply of God’s Word is vast and it’s ever increasing. My bookshelves are filled with several Bibles and a plethora of Bible studies and study resources. I, like all the others in my country, do not lack for the Word of God.

In this proverb, God is pleading with His child not to forget His teaching, His word. This tone implies desperation, a matter of life or death. God knows that keeping His word will bring life but forsaking it will bring death. If we forget His Word, we will not keep His Word. Remembering is likened unto keeping here in Proverbs 3:1. It’s not just a reading of remembrance or even hearing but, it’s a keeping before your heart with all diligence as a guide for living; not for a road map, but for a life map. Our hearts are bombarded every day for things that vie for God’s attention and affection; it’s constantly under attack and in danger every moment of every day of being carried off from the land of safety.

God knows the power of our enemy far more than we ever will and more importantly He knows what life holds for us. The only way we are going to make it is to make a conscience choice to put His Word before us every day. Without it, we are not going to make it. He’s pulling, He’s urging, He’s desiring His children to be in His Word. Will you answer Him today?

I will remember Thee that I might keep Thy Word.
