The Wings of a Father
“He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge.”
The fire had left no tree untouched, no green in its path, and it spared no life that it encountered. It was one of California’s deadliest forest fires, and the firemen had bravely battled against it for days before getting it under control. The firemen had made their way to the top of a ridge when they came upon the lifeless body of a mother bird still upon her nest. The firemen could not understand why the mother bird had not flown away to safety when the flames drew near. As they lifted her burned, ashen body, they found safely sheltered underneath, three newly hatched babies. This is why she had not flown away. This is what kept her stayed upon her nest even when faced with death.
The love of a parent for their child is more powerful than any other force in the universe. It will gladly and unreservedly lay its life down for the child, for the love of a parent doesn’t count the cost, and it knows no bounds. This love will gladly spend and be spent for the child. All this mother bird had to do was fly away and she would have been saved from the perils of death, but she chose not to leave her babies, and so she spread her body over them as a covering that they might live. This is what God, your Father, has done for you on the cross of Calvary. When the perils of death came to engulf your soul He did not run, nor did He hide His face from you, but He chose instead to spread out His arms round about you, and then stretched them from nail to nail, and died in your place.
No mighty flame of hell could have moved Him from His place there, for the bonds of eternal love held Him fast. He could have called ten thousand angels to fly Him far from death, but instead He stayed that you might live. It is the love of a Father for His beloved child and there safely tucked away underneath His pinions of grace are you, precious one. You can run and take refuge there. You can hide yourself away from every care, knowing that nothing and no one can get to you unless they come through Him.
