The Watchman

“…I have appointed you a watchman…”

Ezekiel 3:17

After Charles Cowman’s homecoming these words were found written among his papers.

“When I am dying how glad I will be

That the lamp of my life has been blazed out for Thee.

I shall not mind in whatever I gave.

Labor or money, one heathen to save.

I shall not mind that the way has been rough

That Thy dear feet led the way was enough

When I am dying how glad I shall be

That the lamp of my life has been blazed out for Thee.”

Charles Cowman was one of the world’s greatest missionaries of all time.  He and his wife, Lettie Cowman, were instruments of God to reach all of Asia beginning with the country of Japan.  He lived a life in full blaze for God’s service.  It was said of Charles Cowman’s life that he literally burned out his life for God’s Kingdom.  He had but one passion and that was to reach lost souls with the good news of Jesus Christ.  He abandoned every other passion and embraced only one, God’s call upon his life.  His life bore the scars of service,  the reproaches for Christ, and for his losses he gained a crown.  He was a tireless laborer in the vineyard of the Lord.  There were none braver than he, none more willing to pay any cost that Christ might be known to all.   The world has seen very few men such as he, and they gaze not long upon them when they do, for their lives burn away so quickly.

We have too long slumbered in the night of complacency while so many have slipped into an eternity separated from God.  The sound of the great army of footsteps marching ever steadily into the depths of hell, ring through the halls of heaven while our own halls are filled with laughter and pleasure as if time were standing still.   The watchman is no more, for he has abandoned his post and the walls are bare, they lack for a watchful eye, and for the sound of his cry.   Where is the watchman and where has he gone?  May we weep for his presence and may we shod our feet to fill his empty place.  Who will cry out to all the souls marching toward the portals of hell if there is no watchman?  I pray thee take your stand, for the hour is now, and the Son of man will come quickly as a thief in the night.  I pray that your voice will be heard heralding the name that is above every name, the only name that can save the lost soul, the mighty name of Jesus.

Take thy stand upon the wall until the morning light.
