Unshaken

“Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”

Psalm 55:22

Corrie tin Boom said: “The worry of tomorrow robs us of strength for today.”  Our journey through this life will carry us to many places, some painful, some heavy and burdensome, and some we will understand in the passing that we will never make it lest the supernatural power of God carrys us through to the other side.  From ascending to the valleys low or standing on the mountain peaks, each and every one of us will have our share of burdens, be it good or bad.  Even good things in life can be accompanied by weighty burdens.  Whether you are raising children, living on a fixed income, attending college, living without the love of your life, searching for a new job, owning your own company, changing churches, moving to a foreign mission field, pastoring a church, leading a choir, teaching a class, counseling a patient, investigating a crime, serving on a jury, voting your conscience, working long hours, serving on a board, volunteering as PTO president, performing an operation, organizing a fundraiser, going through a divorce, starting over in a new place, etc, with each one comes responsibilities and duties to perform, expectations to fill. They all come with burdens!  But what do we do, beloved, when the duty calls?  Where are we to run?

As Christians we tend to think that when problems arise we have to be strong because after all we belong to God, right?  God doesn’t want us to “be strong,” rather He wants us to recognize that we are weak and that He alone is the strong One.  God did not create us to be burden carriers.   He bids us to cast each burden as they come, upon Him.   The word cast means to hurl!  It gives the idea of no hesitation, no reservation.  In other words, God doesn’t want us to carry any burden not even for a moment.  As quick as they come they are to go, like a channel for the burdens to pass from this world to the shoulders of an Almighty God.  It’s recognizing that the right to ownership of every burden belongs to God, not ourselves.

When we give to Him what He beckons for, then He gives to us what our heart beckons for -- relief and rest for our weary souls.  And an even greater promise coupled with this one is this, beloved; “He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”  Shaken means: to slip, to be moved, to be greatly shaken, or to be overthrown.  It is used to speak of the mountains!  Listen to the powerful truth that is hidden here in the precious meaning of this word.  When we cast our burdens upon the Lord we will be immovable just like the mountains!  The mountains stand above the clouds undisturbed by the issues of life that surround them.

Are you carrying your burdens?  God wants them, every single one of them.  Will you lay them at His feet today and rest in Him, knowing He is sustaining you?  You will find that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.  Sustaining power is released when burdens are released, not the other way around.  And by the way, a mountain wants for nothing!

Steady me Lord and lift the burdens that weigh down upon my soul.
