The Sound of the Lost

"So you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?"

Matthew 26:40

Does the cry of the heathen ring in your ears? Do the souls marching into eternity beat their dying rhythm upon your heart? Will sleep come quickly for you tonight, or will you be found struggling in prayer in the dark hours for the burden of the lost will not let you rest. The lost will always be present upon the earth, but the opportunity to win them to Jesus will not. Where is the burden for the soul and where is the witness that will win them for Christ? I fear that the Lord has come and looked upon His people, but He has found them sleeping. Can we not keep watch for one hour for the sake of eternity? Where are the prayer warriors who will storm the gates of heaven all the nightlong until redemption has risen upon the heights victorious? Listen to the words of Jeremy Taylor:

"The prayers of holy men appease God’s wrath, drive away temptations, resist and overcome the devil, procure the ministry and service of angels, rescind the decrees of God. Prayer cures sickness and obtains pardon; it arrests the sun in its course and stays the wheels of the chariot of the moon; it rules over all gods and opens and shuts the storehouses of rain; it unlocks the cabinet of the womb and quenches the violence of fire; it stops the mouths of lions and reconciles our suffering and weak faculties with the violence of torment and violence of persecution; it pleases God and supplies all our need."

The question to answer is not why should we pray, but rather, why should we not pray? The ears of heaven have bent low to listen and it has heard the cry of the lost as they march into the eternal realms of hell. But from the church, Heaven hears no cry. The church is silent before the throne. This is the saddest sound of all, as it falls in the ears of God - the sound of silence. With every heartbeat of God resounds the beat of redemption over and over again. Burdens for the lost are found only at the feet of God, and if we never visit there, how are we ever to receive such a burden, precious one? We, as God’s children, are to care about God’s world because He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. What sacrifice would you be willing to give to God’s world, that He loves so deeply, that is might be saved? When was the last time you wept over the lost? When was the last time you told someone of the love of Jesus and His power to save them? The sound of silence is the saddest sound of all. .May you fill heaven with your prayers.

May the feet of God be stained by the tears you have shed in prayer for the lost.
